Answered Prayers

Todd and I are going to go to dinner tonight…A-L-O-N-E, so this will be a quick but through update on Payson.

This morning I went into the hospital nice and early. Payson was very lethargic and was still very pale...more like white as a ghost! Like last night he looked so helpless and it broke my heart to see him lying there with all the tubes and lines coming off him. Around 10 am we had our culprit to all the episodes/illness his blood culture came back positive. He had gotten septic and had gram negative bacteria in his blood. The dr. said this was a nasty bacteria that can cause some very dangerous issues such as low blood pressure, constant drop in heart rate, low oxygen levels, unresponsive, pneumonia and many more issues. Then when the red blood cells begin to attack the bacteria it explodes thus spreading everywhere causing more issues. Since, Payson showed consistent heart rate drops signaling something wasn't quite right they were able to respond quickly to head off any infection. The dr. commented that Payson's drive is what has helped him through all of his medical turmoil and to recover quickly! They are still not sure of the source of this bacteria, but it could possibly have come from his head wounds or his central line. Due to his blood drawls and low blood levels they decided to give him a blood transfusion, (we are still monitoring Paysons platelet levels to see if he will need one of those transfusions too) and soon after it was decided that to be safe they needed to do a spinal tap. He began the blood transfusion around 1 pm and it dripped in him slowly for three hours and by 4 pm he was looking healthy pink. He was also starting to become more and more active. Around 2 pm they did a spinal tap on him while I sat close by praying for him and his pain. He was such a trooper! When the doctor pulled out his spinal fluid she said it was clear which was a great sign, but still needed to do the culture.They commented how strong he was as he fought the position they forced him into so they could do the tap. Even though it sounds horrible the doctor was pleased with it b/c it showed he was feeling better to be able to fight. He also tried to pull his breathing tube out! Yep, he was feeling better. Just in case the respiratory therapist thought he'd have an easy day Payson created enough liquid in his lungs to cause the therapist to go through a box of saline and suction enough mucus to create a Michelin man! (: He is slowly coming back! He still isn't being fed, but will continue with IV's for a couple of more days and the antibiotics for 7-10 days. They will not do another blood culture until Sunday to let Payson build up his blood and let the antibiotics kill the bacteria. If that culture comes back negative then they will be able to talk about putting him back on feeds. It might not have been a good day for Payson, but it was progress in the right direction!

UPDATE: SURGEON CALLED AND SAID THAT PAYSON WAS OFF THE VENTILATOR. WOW! THAT IS A LOT SOONER THAN EXPECTED...LIKE DAYS SOONER AND WASN'T EXPECTED! PRAISE HIM!!!!! IT ALSO LOOKS LIKE THE CENTRAL LINE IS THE CAUSE FOR THE BACTERIAL ENTRANCE INTO THE BLOOD STREAM. THEY WILL CONTINUE TO WATCH PAYSONS PROGRESS AND SEE WHAT HE DOES IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE MAKING A DECISION ON THE LINE.
