Go toward the light...

The last few days I have spent reflecting on the past year. Just reading our highs and lows is exhausting I can hardly believe we lived it! In one entry I mentioned that in 13-14 months we could possibly be decannulated (have the trach permanently removed). Well, the first anniversary of our miracle boy's homecoming has come and gone, guess what that means? Yup, we now can see the glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Yesterday at Payson's doctor's appointment we learned the actual date they will attempt to remove his trach...FOR GOOD!!! I say attempt because there is still a possibility that Payson's tracheomalacia (collapse of the windpipe) is severe. The windpipe needs to have grown and the walls of the pipe need to have become rigid instead of floppy in order for it to be safe enough for Payson to breath without a trach. So, the day of they will take him to the OR and scope him to make sure the malacia has improved and the TEF pouch doesn't affect his breathing ability. (Sometimes the pouch that was created when Payson wasn't connected to his stomach can obstruct the windpipe). The doctor also plans to take a good look in his ears and do if anything what needs to be done.

So you ask what are the chances his still hase sever malacia? Very little, but it is still a real possibility. If it happens that he does still need his trach they will give him a couple of weeks before attempting to decannulate again. They will continue to try until mid-August before telling us we have to wait until the following spring. Yet, if our doctor didn't feel we were ready he wouldn't even allow us to try, so it is a good possibilty that MAY 27th will be the official end date for the trach! WooHoo!
